Our ethical stand with regarding sharks and people is well known and respected. You as our guest and friend can be absolutely confident that we will do our best for you in all aspects of your trip. Viewing the Great White is a serious activity, which should only be done with the right people, equipment and approach. White Shark Projects, directed by world-renowned Craig Ferreira, is one of the top white shark organisations in the world. Under the care and supervision of White Shark Projects you have the confidence of safety, experience, approach and the best opportunity of enjoying an exciting and awesome life experience. Craig invites you and your guests to join him in his passion and view the great whites - face to face. We offer you the unique opportunity of viewing the great whites, or diving with them. While out at sea, you will be educated in an informal environment, learning about the behaviour of the great whites, their history and the urgent need for research. White Shark Projects sponsors the South African White Shark Research Institute, (where Craig served as director for three years), therefore, when you join White Shark Projects on a trip, you have the knowledge that you are also supporting research and conservation. The Research Institute needs all the assistance and funding they can get for their important work. Craig is one of the foremost authorities on great white sharks; he travels the world, giving talks at venues such as the Royal Geographic Society and the Birmingham Dive Show. We run the trips from Klein Bay, which is just outside of Gansbaai (approximately 165km from Cape Town). The area in which we look for the sharks is around Dyer Island. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS. WATER TEMPERATURE AND VISIBILITY? Water temperature is usually between 14 and 18 deg Celsius, so a 5mm or 7 mm wetsuit is recommended. We have full sets of diving equipment available for hire to those who do not wish to bring their own. Be sure to discuss this with us before departure. Water visibility is quite volatile in this area. We have visibility ranging from two meters to forty meters. Over the months November to March, the visibility averages around 5 to 12 meters, and over the months April to October the average visibility is 10 to 20 meters. WHEN ARE THE SHARKS AROUND? The sharks are around throughout the year but are more abundant over the Autumn and winter months. This is from April to September. The peak of great white shark activity is May to September. Having said this, for the past three years we have had excellent white shark activity over the summer months. Over the winter months we have around a 99% success rate (almost guaranteed) of encountering white sharks, and over the summer months this drops to around 90% so either way the chances are better than any other area in the world. WHERE DO I STAY? We have our own fantastic dive lodge with magnificent sea views, great facilities and only two minutes walk from the dock, which bustles with action and boats as people head out to sea to encounter the white sharks. Our lodge is situated in a very safe and beautiful area, where you can freely walk around at any time of day and night, enjoy the sea air, beaches and rock pools. With us you can enjoy all the comforts of our lodge, while still being involved with the raw action of white shark diving. Our white shark dive lodge is the only one of its kind in the world and caters for both divers and non-divers. EQUIPMENT NEEDED. For white shark diving all you require is a wet suit, booties, gloves, mask and hood. We have equipment for hire should you not wish to bring your own equipment. If you wish to hire equipment from us, you should first email or fax us with your requirements so we can make sure that you will have everything you need. HOSPITALS AND MEDICAL FACILITIES. In Gansbaai we have a doctor and a dentist. For more serious problems we have a hospital in Hermanus which is 25 minutes away. You should take out medical travel insurance. |
